How does Sjögren's syndrome affect the eyes?

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the exocrine glands, such as the salivary and lacrimal glands. This condition can have a significant impact on eye health, as the lacrimal glands are responsible for producing the amount of tears needed to keep the eyes lubricated and protected.

It is a common condition, primarily affecting women between the ages of 40 and 60, although it can also affect men and women of any age or ethnicity.

Dry eyes are one of the most common symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome. This can lead to a number of ocular manifestations, including:

• As the name implies, very dry eyes.
• Gritty or foreign body sensation in the eyes
• Redness and itching
• Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
• Blurred vision
• Blepharitis

Diagnosis of ocular Sjögren's syndrome involves a thorough clinical evaluation, specialized tests, and review of the patient's medical history. Some tests may include Schirmer's tests to measure tear production and fluorescein staining to evaluate the ocular surface.

Proper eye care is essential for people with Sjögren's syndrome. Some measures include:

• Eye hygiene habits, such as washing hands before touching the eyes.
• Wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes from intense sunlight and wind.
• Humidifying the environment at home or in the workplace to reduce dryness.
• Blink frequently and perform eye exercises to stimulate tear production.
• Maintain a balanced diet and drink enough water to stay hydrated.

Sjögren's syndrome can have a considerable effect on eye health, causing dryness, irritation and other uncomfortable symptoms. However, with early diagnosis and a comprehensive approach to care, it is possible to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
