Having high eye pressure doesn't necessarily mean you have glaucoma. Although there is a relationship between the two conditions, they are not the same.

Intraocular pressure is the pressure inside the eye. When it is above expected levels and there is no damage to the optic nerve, it may be ocular hypertension.

Glaucoma, on the other hand, is characterized by progressive damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. Elevated eye pressure is one of its main risk factors, but some people can have high pressure for years without developing glaucoma. There are also cases of glaucoma with pressure levels considered normal.

Why isn't measuring pressure enough?

A single reading is not enough to diagnose glaucoma. To determine the condition of the eyes, the ophthalmologist may also evaluate:

  • The optic nerve.
  • The visual field.
  • The thickness of the cornea.
  • Studies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Family history and other risk factors. Furthermore, eye pressure can fluctuate throughout the day, so it should be interpreted in conjunction with the other findings of the evaluation.

What if you have high eye pressure?

Not everyone with ocular hypertension needs treatment. In some cases, regular monitoring may be recommended, and in others, treatment is necessary to lower the pressure and reduce the risk of optic nerve damage.

It's important to remember that high eye pressure and glaucoma are not the same thing. A comprehensive evaluation allows us to determine if any damage exists, understand the level of risk, and establish the most appropriate follow-up to protect your vision.
