Is it safe to use over-the-counter eye drops?
13 February 2025
In the age of information and immediacy, many people opt for self-care solutions to relieve minor eye discomfort, such as redness or dryness. However, the use of over-the-counter eye drops is not recommended. These solutions may seem harmless, but they contain active ingredients that, if not used correctly, could worsen the condition or cause unexpected side effects.
Why avoid the indiscriminate use of eye drops?
1. Variability in eye conditions
Symptoms such as dryness, irritation or redness can be manifestations of various eye problems. Using drops without proper medical evaluation can lead to ineffective or even harmful treatment. Some formulations are designed to relieve specific symptoms, and inappropriate use can mask underlying problems that require professional attention.
2. Active ingredients and their effects
Eye drops contain active ingredients that act directly on the ocular surface. Although these compounds may provide relief, they may also:
- Interact with other medications: If you are already taking an ocular or systemic treatment, the components of the drops could interfere, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment or causing adverse reactions.
- Cause side effects: Inappropriate or prolonged use can lead to irritation, allergies or even a rebound effect, where symptoms worsen after use is stopped.
3. Risk of worsening of the condition
Without the guidance of a professional, there is a danger that the wrong treatment will not only fail to relieve the discomfort, but will worsen the situation. For example, excessive use of decongestant drops can cause an increase in redness or eye irritation, complicating the clinical picture.
